Welcome from the Chair
Welcome to the website of the Department of Dermatology, University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, a state of the art institution which strives to accomplish excellence in the care of patients with different dermatologic conditions requiring medical or surgical intervention.
The Department of Dermatology is proud to provide the best in specialized dermatological care. We have the cutting-edge technology to treat a variety of skin conditions including, papulosquamous and eczematous disorders, inflammatory skin conditions, vesiculobullous diseases and cutaneous malignancies.
Our main goal, first, and foremost, is compassionate and kind patient care.
Our faculty includes world renowned dermatologists and dermatopathologists which provide the best in patient care, teaching and research experience. The faculty also works in conjunction with faculty members from other departments of the UPR School of Medicine to offer interdisciplinary medical care to all our patients.
We are continually challenging our residents in an academically stimulating environment. There are currently eight residents and two research fellows in training. Our residents are considered top in the nation as reflected in the scores of the in-training exam of the American Board of Dermatology, with one of our past residents achieving a perfect score. We also have a strong commitment to research, encouraging medical students, residents and fellows to continue developing research projects throughout their careers and to submit their work for publication in peer reviewed journals. Furthermore, we are the only dermatology program in the nation which publishes its own journal, known as The Caribbean Journal of Dermatology and Medial Therapeutics. This journal is published biannually in an English and Spanish language format.
Our vision of residency training emphasizes a humanitarian aspect as well. Multiple community clinics for the medically indigent are held throughout the year at various island municipalities, where faculty members, residents and medical students are strongly promoted to participate. Free skin cancer clinics are also held twice a year at various local malls and towns across the island.
