MESSAGE FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH AFFAIRS
The Department of Pediatrics at University of Puerto Rico - Medical Sciences Campus is committed to excellence in research. Research in our department has been defined broadly, as a systematic activity designed to generate and disseminate new knowledge. Within this scope, in addition to the traditional areas of quantitative bench, clinical and translational research, innovative research methodologies in the areas of community, educational, and qualitative research are currently being used.
There is a structured research curriculum for residents, who are required to design and complete an original research project, under the tutelage of a faculty member, prior to graduation from the program. The department maintains a close relationship with the recently established Puerto Rico Clinical and Translational Research Consortium in the Medical Sciences Campus. Those interested in developing a research career can enter a special track that leads to a combined Master degree in Clinical and Translational Research, in addition to the pediatric training.
Our monthly Research Conference provides a forum for dissemination of the departmental research activities, and to establish collaboration with invited faculty from other departments in the Medical Sciences Campus or from other institutions. The monthly Journal Club is the core activity of our evidence-based curriculum and has the primary goal of further enhancing our skills in clinical research and literature review.
Several faculty members are actively participating in multicenter international clinical trials. Collaboration with our basic sciences and public health faculty provides the necessary link for productive translational research.
