Overview

The Section of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Immunology at the University Of Puerto Rico School Of Medicine provides care for infants, children, and young adults with both acute and chronic respiratory illnesses, as well as with allergic disorders and immunologic conditions.  The division provides a wide range of patient care services and an active program in clinical research.

As one of the largest pediatric pulmonary service in the island, the division cares for more than 2,000 patients each year.  Our multidisciplinary team is compose of pediatric pulmonologists, pediatric allergist and immunologist, pulmonary nurse specialist, respiratory therapist, nutritionist and social workers.

Clinical Programs

Allergy and Immunology Program

Our Program provides evaluation and treatment for children with various types of allergic and immunologic diseases in the in-patient and outpatient setting.

Pulmonary Program

Our Program provides evaluation and treatment for children with various types of pulmonary diseases in the in-patient and outpatient setting.

High Technology/ Ventilator Dependent Program

Our Program provides evaluation and treatment for children with tracheotomies, mechanical ventilator dependency, oxygen dependent, among other conditions in the in-patient and outpatient setting.

SERVICES

PULMONARY/ALLERGY/IMMUNOLOGY

Inpatient

The division is committed to provide consultation services to the Pediatric University Hospital 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week.  Transfers are accepted from the complete island of Puerto Rico, as well as the Virgin Islands.  Service is trained to perform invasive procedures, such as, flexible bronchoscopy, bronchial lavage, thoracentesis, chest tube placement, antibiotic desensitization, among others.

Outpatient

Services are provided on an outpatient clinic that runs biweekly throughout the year.  Patient dependent of high technology, immune compromise, and cystic fibrosis are seen regularly and on an as needed basis.

RESEARCH

The division is committed to participating in research regarding pulmonary, allergy, and immunology conditions, especially on those issues regarding Hispanics and Puerto Ricans in particular.  Liaisons have been establish with the Department of Hematology Oncology at the Pediatric University Hospital, the Behavioral Science Research Institute at the University of Puerto Rico, as well as several NIH grants in collaboration with Brown University, Harvard and the University of Cincinnati.
