The Residency Program
The Urology Residency program at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine consists of six years of post-graduate fully accredited training program. This is divided as follow in two years of general surgery, three and a half years of clinical urology and six months of urology research. The program is structured to expose Resident physicians to multiple aspects of clinical and academic Urology and become proficient in the process of diagnosis and treatment of such conditions. Residents participate in daily activities of each service with active involvement in diagnostic evaluation of urology patients, pre and post operative care, diagnosis and management of hospitalized patients with multiple urological conditions, and performing and assisting in the operating room in minor and major, open and endoscopic procedures. General urology clinics are held three times per week where residents are exposed to an immense variety of urological conditions. The residency program is located at Puerto Rico Medical Center, a supra-tertiary medical facility providing advanced medical services for the almost four million people living in the Island. San Juan Municipal Hospital provides health care for half a million people living in San Juan Metropolitan area.
In general, the residents at the Urology Section of the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine are exposed to different rotations within affiliated institutions to our program. Adult general urology rotations are conducted at University District Hospital, San Juan Veterans Administration Medical Center, Pavia Medical Center, and San Juan Municipal Hospital. Pediatric urology rotations are conducted at the University District Pediatric Hospital and Renal Transplant rotations at the University of Puerto Rico kidney transplant program. The rotations by year are as follow:

Objective
The objective of the Urology residency Program at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine is to provide a well-rounded clinical experience with significant exposure to all aspects of Urology. Our large number of clinical and surgical cases ensures that every resident obtains adequate experience in various aspect of Urology including infertility, endourology, neurourology, female urology, oncology, pediatric urology, sexual dysfunction and reconstructive urology.

1. Fatty acid analysis of smegma in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the penis and control subjects
2. Urinary lithiasis in Puerto Rico treated with ESWL: Ten year experience
3. Conservative management of blunt renal trauma and lacerations grade IV-V
4. Early diagnosis of prostate cancer in Puerto Rican patients
5. Prevalence of testicular tumors in pts w sonographic evidence of microlithiasis
6. Incidence of bladder neck contractures after radical retropubic prostatectomy
7. Prevalence of erectile dysfunction among patients 18-79 yrs in the San Juan Metropolitan Area
8. Sentinel node biopsy for assessment of inguinal metastasis in patients w squamous cell CA of the penis
9. Disease control and quality of life after radical inguinal lymphadenectomy for penile squamous cell CA: UPR-RCM experience
